Swimmers looking forward to enjoying the warm weather and taking a dip in the city-run outdoor pools in St. John’s, were disappointed this week to find the pools drained and the doors locked. A woman who brought her family from Bay Roberts says she was surprised to find the gates locked at Bannerman Park. She kept scrambling to see if she could get her kids, who are too old to swim, into Paul Reynolds for a bath. He says closing the outdoor pools on August 28 is “too early”. Most of the city’s pools are staffed by students preparing to return to university. The city says lifeguard recruitment was a challenge this year and they were grateful to be able to offer a full summer of free outdoor swimming.
