To that end, Dean Smith brings Todd Cantwell and Teemu Pukki into his lineup. North of the border, Celtic beat Rangers in the first Old Firm derby of the season. Ouch: The whistle blows at Goodison Park and the Merseyside derby somehow ends goalless, thanks to both goalkeeping and woodwork that goes beyond the call of duty. It was a good game, with the game running from end to end during a high-intensity second half, with Liverpool the more frustrated side who slammed the door and forced Jordan Pickford into a string of second-half saves. It could have been worse – Conor Coady’s VAR winner spared them – but their stuttering start to the season continues. Report to follow soon. Jordan Pickford drinks it in. Some eyebrows may be raised quite a bit in Thomas Tuchel’s line-up, where Conor Gallagher and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are chosen over Jorginho and Mason Mount. Christian Pulisic also gets the nod for Kai Havertz, with Wesley Fofana making his debut. West Ham were buoyant with Lucas Paqueta making his first start alongside Pablo Fornals, Jarrod Bowen and Michael Antonio. Patrick Vieira has also selected four recognized strikers for the trip to Newcastle, whose silky young striker Alexander Isak maintains his place up top. Jesse Lingard returns to the Forest side for the visit of Bournemouth, who were happy enough with their midweek stalemate against Wolves to resist changes. Bruno Lage wastes no time introducing Sasa Kalajdzic: quite understandable given that Kalajdzic is a striker known to find the back of the net from time to time. And Richarlison makes his first start for Spurs, meaning Antonio Conte deploys the Kane-Son-Richalison trio for the first time. Will Fulham pay the price – or can their hot-headed goal steal the show? Updated at 14.39 BST

Preamble
After the dream comes the cold, hard reality. The summer transfer window has seen Premier League clubs spend more than in any other full season – and each exotic signing will have sparked thousands of fevered imaginations. Now it’s time to see how they measure up. After denying an in-form Spurs victory on Wednesday, West Ham will fancy their chances of doing the same against an out-of-form Chelsea. Thomas Tuchel can use the Declan Rice Derby to give debuts to the fruits of last week’s trolley: Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Denis Zakaria. Newcastle and Crystal Palace start their game biting each other at the end of the week. If Eddie Howe is looking to transform a workmanlike side into an exciting one, then he can look to Patrick Vieira for the blueprint. Vieira’s side not only have the best counter-attacker in the league in Wilfried Zaha, but also, perhaps, their most notable player in Ebereci Eze – yet Newcastle now have a lackluster stylish striker in Alexander Isak. Brentford and Leeds have both spent the first month of the season trying and failing to find their form. Both have dealt tonkings at heavyweight. both have failed against mediums. Will today’s meeting enlighten us as to whether these sides are good? Almost certainly not. No team has scored fewer goals this season than Wolves and only one has conceded fewer. Will this miserable trend be reversed when the two sides led by Raul Jimenez and Che Adams meet? Or maybe we get a look at Sasa Kalajdzic or Samuel Edozie? We’ll see soon. And Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth are both fresh from powerful attacks and last week’s combined scoreline would have been a 17-1 rout. Could this be the first football matches in history that both sides lose? Stay tuned to find out. Plus we’ll bring you the latest from the Football League, and maybe even a bit of Europe. Put on the kettle.
