Police declined to name the establishment, but a person with knowledge of the investigation who declined to be identified because the investigation is ongoing identified it as City Bar, 636 State St. Madison police said in a statement Friday that the operation at about 10 p.m. in the 600 block of State Street was aimed at “preemptive enforcement of liquor laws in the downtown area.” “Several local bars were visited and the establishments cooperated with officers on scene,” said police spokesman Hunter Lisco. “At one particular bar, officers located and cited 137 people for underage drinking and false identification violations. It is worth noting that officers contacted a total of 143 people at this bar, and only six of them were 21 years of age or older.”

Police declined to name the bar “until further action is taken to determine the bar’s role in the matter.” City Bar seats just under 200. Its owner, Adam Greenberg, did not return phone or email messages Friday. Neither does City Councilman Patrick Heck, whose district includes the bar. Assistant City Attorney Jennifer Zilavy, who would be responsible for drafting any city complaint against the bar, said she had not yet seen reports of the incident and therefore did not know if a complaint was likely.
