Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes could be in a “good position” for Sunday’s Dutch GP
Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes could be in a “good position” for Sunday’s Dutch GP
Lewis Hamilton says he could be in a “good position” to challenge for victory in Sunday’s Dutch GP, but pole-sitter Max Verstappen insists he is not worried about Mercedes’ pace.
Hamilton will start fourth at Zandvoort after a final-corner crash by Verstappen’s Red Bull team-mate Sergio Perez denied both Mercedes drivers the chance to complete their final full-speed flying lap.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff insisted Hamilton was on course to beat Verstappen – along with Ferrari duo Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz – on pole, while Hamilton said she was “certainly” in the race for a front row start.
Despite being off the pace of Red Bull and Ferrari all season, Mercedes generally had a faster relative speed on race day than in qualifying, leading to hope that being so close in qualifying in in this case it means that Hamilton will be able to mount a challenge on Sunday.
“We’re close and hopefully we can fight those guys in the race,” said Hamilton, who is looking for his first win of the season.

“It’s a tough race to overtake, as we’ve seen in the past, but we’ve got nothing to lose, we’ve got to give it our all.
“If the delta of our pace from a single lap to the race that we normally have carried over then we could be in a good spot and then it depends on strategy and things like that.

“I don’t think it will necessarily be overtaking on the track, but I will keep my hopes up and see what I do.”
After securing pole Verstappen, who goes into the race with a 93-point lead in the world championship, appeared to dismiss Mercedes’ hopes, simply replying “no” when asked if he was worried about their pace.
The Ferrari duo plan to work together
To catch up to Verstappen, Hamilton will first need to get past the Ferraris of Leclerc and Sainz, who have expressed their intention to work together to put pressure on the Dutchman.
“I think our race pace looks pretty strong,” said Leclerc, who has only managed a podium finish in the last nine races.

“It will be close with Red Bull, but we have to make a good start and then we will see.
“The easy way would be a great start, P1 at Turn 1, then drop Max back, but if that doesn’t happen, Carlos and I are up front, so let’s see what we can do there.

“I think you always try to work together whenever you’re in that position.”
Sainz, who, like Leclerc, was within a tenth of Verstappen’s qualifying time in qualifying, echoed his teammates’ sentiment.

“I think it will be an interesting day,” said the Spaniard. “There will be a lot going on, even if it’s a tough track to overtake, there will still be plenty of options with strategies.
“I think we can work together. We can play with strategy.
“It’s also true that Max has a set of new tires that we don’t have, which gives him a bit of an advantage, but even with that I’m sure we can at least challenge him and make his life a bit difficult.”

Sky Sports F1’s Nico Rosberg said Verstappen remains favourite, but gives Ferrari and Mercedes a chance to upset the Dutchman in his home race.
“Max still has a place on the track so you probably say he has to be the favourite, he’s also generally on it and in great form as a driver,” said Rosberg, the 2016 world champion.
“But it will be very interesting because Ferrari are likely to split the strategy and let’s see if Lewis can play a role there as well.

“If Mercedes find the usual improvement in pace from qualifying to race, or even just a fraction of that, Lewis will be right there putting a lot of pressure on. And Lewis is quick in the races as we know.
“So I think we’re in for a really exciting one and I’m looking forward to seeing how it plays out.”
