They say a 27-year-old Foothills County man was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. An RCMP release says two men were taken into custody nearby. The investigation is now being handled by the Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit and the RCMP Forensic Identification Unit. Investigators would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about it. Police say the incident is unrelated to another fatal stabbing that happened on August 5. In that incident, police say 26-year-old Ethan Enns-Goneau, who lived in Banff, was stabbed multiple times after a fight inside a bathroom.

Police have charged 22-year-old John-Christopher Arrizza of Banff with second-degree murder in connection with Enns-Goneau’s death. In a statement sent out Saturday afternoon, RCMP said while people may feel concerned after learning of two fatal stabbings in one month, Banff residents and visitors should feel safe while in town. “Our officers are dedicated to your safety and the protection of our community,” said Staff Sgt. Mike Buxton-Carr, Banff Detachment Commander; “Banff RCMP actively patrol the downtown core, including the pedestrian zone, every night to provide a visible crime deterrent and are always available to respond to the public’s calls for assistance.” Police had blocked off much of the 100 block of Banff Avenue Saturday afternoon as they conducted their investigation. Workers at several businesses in the area confirmed they had to close Saturday due to limited business access.

An employee at Banff Ave. Brewing Co., who asked not to be named, said there was police tape on both ends of the 100 block of Banff Avenue, as well as more police tape around the scene. The clerk said most businesses in the area were closed unless they had a way to bring customers through the back alley. Banff Mayor Corrie DiManno said in a written statement that, like many in the community, she is “angry, deeply saddened and shocked” by the stabbing, and offered her condolences to the victim’s family and friends. “This brutal violence is shocking to our community and we take this matter very seriously,” DiManno said. “We continue to be a community grieving and healing from the tragic loss of a lifelong Banffite in August, so this incident will rekindle stress and trauma for some. It is vital that people who struggle to access the support services they need during this time.” He said the City of Banff will continue to cooperate with the RCMP during their investigation and work with police, industry leaders and community members to ensure Banff remains a safe place.
