The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) said the crime investigation team arrested a 44-year-old man at his home in Sainte-Beatrix, an hour and a half north of Montreal. The images were posted directly to Lévesque’s social media accounts. The candidate drew attention to the sign on his Twitter account, adding that he had filed a police report. “This type of publication is unacceptable,” he said. “We may be against ideas, but violence and intimidation will never be tolerated.” The suspect will appear in Joliette court on Sept. 29 on charges to be determined by the Crown.
I went to file a complaint at the police station this morning. This type of posting is unacceptable. We can be against ideas, but violence and bullying will never be tolerated. Depending on what’s on the sign, Scholtus said, counterfeiters of campaign signs can receive fines or face charges. The SQ has set up a special emergency number for major party candidates who receive threats or attacks. Liberal candidate Marwah Rizqy said she received threats on her life over the phone and that her colleague, Enrico Ciccione, had his office broken into.
