Officers were called to the crash in the city’s southeast Friday night, and investigators believe the heavily modified 1984 Mercury Capri lost control, mounted the curb and struck two large decorative boulders. The impact sent it rolling onto its roof. The driver, a man in his 30s, was pronounced dead at the scene and investigators believe speed and alcohol were both factors in the crash. Police say in a press release that the car was not technical and appeared to have been modified for racing. They say it only had a driver’s seat, which did not have a seat belt. The interior was stripped, the glass removed and a roll cage installed.
