In 2019, Rotten Tomatoes attempted to address this issue by developing verified reviews that allow users to prove they purchased tickets for the movie they’re reviewing. It also started preventing users from posting reviews of movies that haven’t even been released yet. This obviously doesn’t help much when it comes to TV reviews, but it came in response to users bombarding Captain Marvel, Black Panther and Star Wars: The Last Jedi with bad reviews at the time.
