Hinshaw emphasizes the importance of preventing the spread of communicable diseases

As students return to classrooms, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health is stressing the importance of preventing the spread of communicable diseases. Dr. Deena Hinshaw took to Twitter last Friday to remind Albertans what they can do to prevent the spread of diseases like COVID-19, including staying home when sick, washing hands regularly and being informed about all the usual vaccinations. “The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted daily childhood immunization schedules worldwide, leaving many at higher risk for vaccine-preventable diseases such as polio and measles,” said Hinshaw. “Elevated risk anywhere in the world is also an increased risk for us, as imported diseases can quickly spread through our population – particularly in communities with lower vaccination rates.” Hinshaw encouraged Albertans to access the vaccines they are eligible for as an “important level of protection” against infectious diseases. “I would like to thank all the hard-working public health professionals who have helped to keep vaccination schedules where possible and the support of schools and parents as we continue to work to increase numbers – keep it up,” said Hinshaw. All Albertans age 14 and older can access their immunization records to check if they are up to date on their immunizations at www.alberta.ca/myhealthrecords.
