The Saskatchewan Health Authority has activated its emergency response process as a result of the situation, spokeswoman Anne Lindemann said in an emailed statement, adding that additional personnel have been called for to “respond to the influx of casualties.” “We can confirm that many people are being tested and cared for across multiple sites. … We are unable to confirm additional details,” he said. Police said in a mid-morning press release that it was “a rapidly evolving situation.” A shelter in force has been issued and multiple STARS ambulances have been dispatched.

Tracy Marion, manager of the James Smith Community Store and Gas Station, woke up, like many in the province, to alerts ringing on her smartphone around 7am. “I slept in and just woke up to all this news,” he said. Since then, he said he has seen the First Nation’s usual calm give way to a heavy police presence on the ground and the sound of helicopters in the air, but access to and from the community remained open. “There’s so much going on, no one thinks about it,” he said. Police are looking for Damien Sanderson and Myles Sanderson. Sanderson is 5-foot-1 and 155 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. Sanderson is 6-foot-1 and 200 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. No further details were given about the relationship between the two men.

The suspects may be driving a black Nissan Rogue with license plate SK 119 MPI, RCMP said in a news release. A social media post also said the two men were in that vehicle.
