Romualdo Macedo Rodrigues’ boat started taking on water while traveling in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of northern Brazil – and then began to sink. Brazilian fisherman survived 11 days at sea in a floating freezer after his boat sank. CEN Rodrigues was eventually rescued by a boat off Suriname. “I was desperate,” Rodrigues told Record TV, CNN reported. “I thought my end was coming. But thank God, God gave me another chance.” Rodrigues, who cannot swim, said he noticed the freezer bursting into the water as the rest of the boat slipped out of his sight. “I jumped into it, it fell to one side and it stayed normal,” he said. Rodrigues had to survive in the shark-infested waters, and he also didn’t know how to swim. Rodrigues said the sharks circled the freezer but never attacked – and that he had to collect water with his hands whenever it started to fill up. “I didn’t sleep,” he said. “I saw the dawn, the dusk, asking God to send someone to save me. I was thinking about my children, my wife. Every day I thought about my mother, my father, my whole family. It gave me hope.” Just as his fight for survival began to fade, the boat arrived and rescued him. Rodrigues called the freezer “God in his life” and a miracle.CEN “I raised my hands and asked for help,” he said. “This freezer has been God in my life. The only thing I had was the freezer. It was a miracle.”
