David Phelan The iPhone 14 Pro is just one of four iPhones that are almost certain to be unveiled in just three days, on Wednesday, September 7. There will also be an iPhone 14, a similar phone with a larger screen, perhaps called the iPhone 14 Plus, and the large-screen iPhone 14 Pro Max. MORE FROM FORBESApple iPhone 14 Pro: New leak echoes dazzling new design by David Phelan But the two Pro phones seem to have the coolest new feature exclusively, and that’s an always-on display. Apple isn’t the first company to offer this handy add-on, which means you don’t have to pick up your phone or tap it to see the time or if you have notifications pending. However, a new leak, spotted by MacRumors, suggests that Apple’s always-on display could be worth the wait. The report claims that the lock screen that comes with iOS 16 will work differently on the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max compared to any other iPhone that is compatible with iOS 16. On the new Pro iPhones, the lock screen will interact with the always-on display and use wallpaper colors and depth effects, for example. This is a very nice thing. This is what the always-on screen will look like on the iPhone 14 Pro? MacRumors Apple has given us an idea of what it will look like already, on the Apple Watch. Since Series 5, there’s an always-on screen. The watch faces have two states, one when it’s active, like when you raise your wrist, and another that consumes less power on the watch’s OLED display that snaps into place after a few seconds. This second mode is much more muted in terms of colors, does not show the seconds passing, and has much less information. Until you lift your wrist again. According to the leak, the lock screen wallpapers will be dark in color, with depth effects removed and the foreground will be dark. It won’t just be black and white, though: the foreground will be “colored with chromatic and edge features, depending on user customization.” Graphical elements such as text message notifications or the weather will be visible, but will fade in and out to prevent OLED burn-in. Notifications will slide from the bottom to the always-on screen, just like the regular lock screen, remaining visible for 10 seconds. This is all very exciting and I am personally looking forward to it. Well, none of us need to: all will be revealed next Wednesday.
