Windsor police say a vehicle crashed into a home in the 4200 block of Canberra Avenue around 10:30 p.m. Police, fire crews and EMS were on the scene. Randa Halabi lives nearby and said she is lucky to be alive after cornering Ducharme in her own vehicle moments before the crash. “As soon as I turned that corner I saw the cars go by,” Halabi told CTV News. “There were two cars that flew past me and immediately in five seconds there was a crash.” “He just flew. The world is always speeding up. I just said, “wow, it’s going so fast.” But as soon as he got to this corner and I was here, I heard the car break down and there was no brake. You just heard the sound. It was like a bomb went off.” “It’s so sad. It’s so sad. I wanted to throw up right away.”
Saturday night at approximately 10:30 p.m., a 2017 Gray Honda Pilate crashed into a residence located in the 4200 blk of Canberra. The driver was taken to hospital with serious injuries. Anyone in the area with video surveillance please check for footage of the vehicle. pic.twitter.com/nXCOsF4iYQ — Windsor Police (@WindsorPolice) September 4, 2022 Nearby resident Jason Unger said he and his family have been advocating for slower speed limits in the neighborhood for several years. “There are children who go to school around here and we are trying to reduce the speed limit here and take traffic calming measures. It’s very dangerous here.” Unger explained. “It’s not safe here. You know if there were people walking on the sidewalk or people who are at home there, if they happened to be on the deck at 11 o’clock at night there would be more serious injuries.” He added that there is hope that more traffic calming measures will be introduced in the neighborhood, adding that he hopes speeding will continue to be tackled. “We’re doing our part here as citizens, but we need help from the Windsor Police Traffic Unit to start setting up some radar here maybe. We’ve tried it. They set the speed limits and we occasionally see them in the neighborhood. But I think a little bit more needs to be done here,” Unger said. “This is a drag movie. I call it the Ducharme drag strip.” Police are asking anyone in the area under surveillance to check their body cameras for any evidence.
